Emily Carr (1871-1945) is recognized as one of the most vital modern Canadian painters, and her memoirs and diaries hold a high place among Canadian autobiographical writings. Yet she did not have her first major exhibition of paintings until she was fifty-six and did not publish her first book until she was seventy (it went on to win the prestigious Governor General’s Award in 1941). Through combination of autobiographical readings and reviewing a selection of her remarkable watercolours, sketches and paintings, you’ll come to know about the life, loves and legacy of one of the most fascinating artists in Canadian history.

It is not all bad, this getting old, ripening. After the fruit has got its growth it should juice up and mellow. God forbid I should live long enough to ferment and rot and fall to the ground like a squash.
It is wonderful to feel the grandness of Canada in the raw, not because she is Canada but because she's something sublime that you were born into, some great rugged power that you are a part of.
I think that one's art is a growth inside one. I do not think one can explain growth. It is silent and subtle. One does not keep digging up a plant to see how it grew.
What do these forests make you feel? Their weight and density, their crowded orderliness. There is scarcely room for another tree and yet there is space around each. They are profoundly solemn yet upliftingly joyous. You can find everything in them that you look for, showing how absolutely full of truth, how full of reality the juice and essence of life are in them. They teem with life, growth, expansion…
